FACE SERUM GUIDE: WHY TO USE A FACE SERUM AND WHICH FACIAL SERUM TO USE

Main-serums-2-450x338

If you’re into skin care, chances are you’re using a moisturizer for your skin type. But, here’s the question—are you also using a face serum?

Face serums and facial moisturizers go together like peanut butter and jelly—both are way better when used together!

If you’re wondering how your skin benefits from a facial serum, when and how to use a face serum and what is the best face serum for your skin type, we’re sharing it all here for you.

WHY SHOULD I USE A FACE SERUM?

Face serums are formulated with a high concentration of key ingredients, but are lightweight in formula so they can be layered under creams or lotions.

Think of a face serum as a booster for your daily skin care program, providing an extra layer of ingredients to the skin for added benefits.

You can also think of a serum like a vitamin for your complexion: The more beneficial ingredients you provide to the surface layer of your skin the better it will appear.

WHEN TO USE A FACE SERUM?

Face serums should be part of your morning and nighttime skin care routine and are ALWAYS applied BEFORE your moisturizer, although they can be used alone.

A full skin care routine includes cleansing, toning, applying a facial serum, and then moisturizer and sun protection.

Two to three times a week you will want to cleanse, tone, exfoliate AND THEN apply your face serum.

HOW DO I USE A FACE SERUM?

  1. After cleansing and toning (and exfoliating 2-3 times a week) you want to apply your face serum.
  2. Apply a full dropper or one pump’s worth of your facial serm to your fingertips.
  3. Massage into your face as necessary, taking care to only use your fingertips.
NOTE: You don’t want to apply your face serum onto your palm because your palm has more surface area. It will absorb the product that should be being absorbed by your face!
  4. Follow with a moisturizer

WHICH FACE SERUM DO I USE?

The best way to choose a face serum is by picking one for your skin type or concern.

You can also use multiple serums if you have several different skin concerns (i.e. hydration + skin brightening)

Read below as we share the different types of facial serums.

FACE SERUM FOR OILY / PROBLEM SKIN

Do you experience oily skin or problem areas frequently? Then you want to use a face serum with AHAS and BHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids), like Glycolic and Salicylic Acid.

These ingredients will help target these concerns by gently exfoliating the skin. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and grime build up which contribute to oily and problem skin.

FACE SERUM FOR OILY/ COMBINATION SKIN

Is your skin oily on your nose, forehead and chin area?

You want to use a serum that will help control the appearance of oil in these areas, while not drying out the rest of your face.

A face serum with a blend of oil-fighting and cleansing ingredients, including Witch Hazel, Lemongrass, Laminaria Saccharina Seaweed extract, and Salicylic Acid, and hydrating ingredients, including Laminaria Digitata Seaweed extract, will help you find just the right balance.

Sensitive skin is easily stressed, and can appear red, dry and irritated.

A serum with ingredients, such as Laminaria Digitata Seaweed extract, silver and natural antioxidant ingredients of Rutin, Quercetin, Aloe, Chamomile, and Mirabilis Jalapa Extra will help reduce the appearance of redness and dryness.

Consistently using a brightening serum in your daily routine can help reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone.

FACE SERUM FOR CROW’S FEET AND FINE LINES

Ingredients like Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, and Sweet Almond Seed Extract can help diminish the appearance of crow’s feet and lines that occur on your eye area and forehead.

FACE SERUM FOR AGING SKIN: FINE LINES, WRINKLES

Do you see deeper lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity on your jaw or neck, or notice your capillaries getting more noticeable. All can be signs of aging skin.

With aging skin, layering your skin care and using a serum and moisturizer is an important antiaging tip.

Ingredients for aging skin, such as Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, Seaweed extracts, Niacinimide/Vitamin B3, Deep Sea Thermophilus, Camellia Sinensis (Green & White Tea) Leaf, Red Clover, and Horse Chestnut extracts help to restore moisture, while lessening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
